A week has more than ten thousand minutes. How about using only 10 to protect yourself from the Aedes aegypti?
This is the proposal of the initiative 10 Minutes Against Aedes Conceived based on the scientific knowledge of the researchers at the Instituto Oswaldo Cruz (IOC/Fiocruz), the project is inspired by a control strategy of the Aedes aegypti adopted in Singapore, which was able to interrupt the peak of the dengue epidemic in the country with weekly actions by the population inside their homes, of just 10 minutes, to clean the main breeding sites in the country. A. aegypti.
The mosquito that transmits dengue, Zika and chikungunya viruses lives and breeds in and around our homes. Working once a week to clean breeding sites, the population interferes with the development of the vector, since its life cycle, from egg to adult mosquito, takes 7 to 10 days. With a weekly action, it is possible to prevent mosquito eggs, larvae and pupae from reaching the adult stage, curbing the transmission of these diseases.
Application of the strategy in Rio de Janeiro and Minas Gerais
Developed by specialists from the Laboratories of Physiology and Control of Arthropod Vectors and Mosquitoes Transmitting Hematozoa of the IOC in partnership with communication professionals from the Institute, the project 10 Minutes Against Aedes reinforcement of F's historic commitmentiocled to putting scientific knowledge at the service of public health. After elaborating the concept, the initiative entered a phase of prospecting partnerships for implementation, which was signed with the Rio de Janeiro State Health Secretariat (SES). At the time, the project was called 10 Minutes Against Dengue.
In March 2011, the action took to the streets of the city in a pilot project for the application of the strategy, marking the official beginning of the partnership IOC-SES. At the time, the concept was worked on in the communities of Chapu Mangueira and Babilnia. In September 2011, SES officially announced the concept as the theme of the new 2010/2011 campaign to combat dengue in the State. The rerun of the campaign in the state for the second consecutive year was released in January 2013.
Also inspired by the original concept of the 10 minutes against dengue, the Minas Gerais State Health Secretariat (SES/MG) launched in November 2015 a campaign to mobilize, control and confront The proliferation of the Aedes aegypti mosquito. The action aims to reduce cases of dengue, chikungunya and Zika virus.
The creation of the concept and the realization of the pilot were activities carried out within the scope of the Pronex-Dengue Network, "Development and Evaluation of New Technologies and Surveillance Strategies in the Control of Dengue" , which has the support of FAPERJ and CNPq.
