Created in 1907, the scientific periodical Memórias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz was already concerned with international dissemination, so much so that in 1909 articles were published in Portuguese, French, English and German.
In this sense, Oswaldo Cruz spared no efforts in the graphic quality of the magazine, hiring excellent designers who made illustrations of high scientific fidelity. In the same period, the “Nova human trypanozomiaze” was published, an article authored by Dr. Carlos Chagas, with a German version, which is still one of the most cited texts in the magazine.
In 1989, important advances took place, such as indexing the journal in the database of the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI), a world reference for scientific journals, the inclusion of images on the cover of the journal, the inclusion of articles by new researchers and the publication of texts in English.
Currently, Memórias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz is recognizably international, with more than 45% of its articles coming from abroad. In 1997, the online version of the journal was launched, which was also included in the SciELO database at this time.
