Chagas Disease: Changing the Game

The documentary shows testimonials from residents of Jaguaruana, Russas and Morada Nova, municipalities located in the hinterland of Ceará, where contact with the barber is part of the population's daily life.

Researcher Marli Lima, head of the Laboratory of Eco-epidemiology of Chagas Disease in IOC/Fiocruz, has been carrying out important scientific work with his team since 2002 in the region with the objective of collecting data, identifying carriers of the disease and informing about the dangers to which people are being exposed with the presence of the vector.

The creator of the DVD is researcher Joseli Lannes, head of the Interaction Biology Laboratory. The title of the documentary Chagas disease: changing the game arouses people's curiosity. Joseli reveals that the choice of name is linked to the concentration of efforts to eliminate the main vector of the disease in the Northeast, as already achieved in the South and Southeast regions of the country.

On June 9, 2006, during an official ceremony, the Minister of Health received a certification from the World Health Organization (WHO) for the virtual elimination in Brazil of the transmission of Chagas disease by the main regional vector, the triatoma infestans.
