Costa Lima Entomological Exhibition Room

The Costa Lima Entomological Exhibition Room of the Oswaldo Cruz Institute (IOC) is dedicated to the scientific dissemination of insects. The space was inaugurated on September 24, 2008, during the 2nd National Symposium of Scientific Collections, and houses the exhibition The Entomology of Costa Lima and the show Entomological Biodiversity. The room complements the historic Oswaldo Cruz and Carlos Chagas exhibition rooms on the 2nd floor of Castelo Mourisco (headquarters of the Fiocruz, in Rio de Janeiro).

The entomology of Costa Lima
The exhibition brings together approximately 100 representative specimens from the collection of researcher Ângelo Moreira da Costa Lima. Author of more than 300 scientific works and founder of studies in agricultural entomology, Costa Lima has worked with almost all major groups of insects, researching Diptera, Coleoptera, Hymenoptera, Lepidoptera, Hemiptera, Orthoptera, Isoptera, Psocoptera, Siphonaptera, among many others.

The researcher's collection has around 7 specimens and is now preserved in the Entomological Collection of the IOC. Several species were described to honor Costa Lima, such as Lutzomyia costalimai (Mangabeira, 1942); Wyeomyia limai (Lane & Cerqueira, 1942); Simulium costalimai (Vargas & Martinez Palacios, 1946); Triatoma costalimai (Verano & Galvão, 1959).

Biodiversity
The Biodiversity exhibition provides an overview of the insect group, with specimens of all orders. There are 300 insects from the Didactic Collection, including priceless specimens, collected during scientific expeditions carried out by researchers from the Institute throughout Brazil from the beginning of the 20th century to the present day. Which, in addition to its scientific importance, enchants for its aesthetic beauty.

The Entomological Collection of the IOC, one of the largest in Latin America, has a collection of approximately 5 million insects and, in addition to being a valuable source of data for scientific research, is a national heritage of great historical and cultural value.
