The course 'Community Health: A Construction for All' at Instituto Oswaldo Cruz (IOC/Fiocruz) began in 2010 with the objective of disseminating, improving and expanding the health knowledge of the participants, starting with the formation of multipliers, that is, people who spread knowledge of the health area to their families, neighbors, friends and acquaintances.
Over the course of 15 editions, the initiative trained more than 1400 participants from 110 communities in Rio de Janeiro, municipalities in all states of Brazil and cities in Angola and Port-au-Prince (Portuguese-speaking countries on the African continent).
The course is built based on the survey of social, historical and epidemiological characteristics of the communities, obtained through bibliographic research and health indicators. In an articulated way, in dynamic and expository meetings that allow all participants to be protagonists in the process of building knowledge, the initiative promotes the exchange of knowledge and encourages students to identify, report and analyze the health and environment problems of the territory, promoting social empowerment.

The themes of the classes are adapted annually, taking into account the evaluations of former students and professors. Among the subjects already addressed are allergy and food intolerance, access to medicines, vaccines and fake news, women's and men's health, care for the elderly, healthy eating, water management, correct disposal of solid waste, prevention of tuberculosis, parasites diseases, zoonoses, STIs and AIDS and the main ways to avoid the proliferation of the Aedes aegypti, mosquito that transmits dengue, Zika and chikungunya.
Going beyond the classroom environment, supervised by professors and monitors (students of the Fiocruz and partner Universities such as UFRJ, UERJ, UNIRIO and UFF), students promote social mini-projectsioccommunity members in their communities to disseminate new knowledge. At the end of the course, the participants present to the other students the health promotion actions that were carried out.
Due to the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, since 2020, the initiative has migrated indefinitely to the online environment. In order to maintain the dynamism and social impact of social mini-projectsiocmunities, participants started to use social networks (YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp and Tik Tok) as a way to disseminate content and engage their communities.
