History

The Oswaldo Cruz Institute plays an important role in training researchers and human resources in the areas of Biological and Biomedical Sciences and Health Education. Developing basic research and new technologies in its laboratories, it is one of the main national research and teaching centers in these areas.

The teaching tradition in IOC began with specialization at the postgraduate level, when Oswaldo Cruz created the 'Manguinhos Application Course' in 1908. Initially aimed at consolidating and disseminating Bacteriology as an area of knowledge and as a basis for biomedical research, the course gave rise to the current Postgraduate Programs that have trained human resources in research for the Oswaldo Cruz Institute itself, for other units of the Fiocruz and to other institutions in the country and Latin America. Read the book 'A School for Science and Health - 111 Years of Teaching at Instituto Oswaldo Cruz' and learn more about the relevance of the teaching area in IOC (click here).

Currently, Master's and Doctoral courses are offered in Parasitic Biology, Tropical Medicine, Cellular and Molecular Biology, Teaching in BiocSciences and Health, Computational Biology and Systems and Biodiversity and Health, in addition to a Professional Master's Degree in Surveillance and Vector Control. The seven Postgraduate Programs Strict sensu do IOC have already held more than 4.000 masters and doctors.

O IOC It also has four Postgraduate Programs Lato sensu. The Specialization Course in Entomology is exclusively focused on the area of Medical Entomology. The Malacology Specialization Course works with a multidisciplinary perspective and aims to train human resources to work in the elaboration and execution of strategies to control molluscs of medical importance. The specialization course in Teaching BiocSciences and Health contributes strongly to the continuing education of Biology teachers in the State of Rio de Janeiro, in addition to the creation of various processes and products in the area of Education. The three courses are aimed, preferably, at professionals from government agencies such as the National Health Foundation and state and municipal health and education secretariats, respectively. The Specialization course in Science, Art and Culture in Health was created in 2009 and seeks to develop pedagogical practices and provide theoretical foundations for the strengthening of humanization and health promotion policies in the SUS, promoting broader visions and stimulating dialogue between the fields of knowing.

Regarding the Technical Level courses, the Institute offers the Technical Course in Biotechnology, registered with the MEC since 2000, which is intended for students who have completed high school, lasting one year. O IOC also offers the Technical Level Specialization Course in Parasitic Biology and Biotechnology, also with a duration of one year, intended for graduates of technical courses in the area of Health.

Teaching programs are integrated with research activities. The researchers make up the faculty of the courses developed and, in addition to coordinating disciplines, receive students in their Laboratories for the development of monographs, dissertations, theses and technical training. Consequently, the projects developed by the students follow the characteristics of the research developed at the Institute, generating new knowledge and even innovations, since some theses even generate patent requests.

Accompanying the efforts to deconcentrate postgraduate programs in the country, the Institute offers courses and has accredited advisors in several states of the country to assist students enrolled in its courses who develop thesis work outside the headquarters.

In the field of student performance, the IOC has representatives from the Postgraduate Programs Strict sensu, entitled to a seat on the Technical Teaching Chamber of the IOC and participation in the Institute's Deliberative Council. Student representation is also present in the structuring of work groups to discuss and propose specific topics. In 2009, the Postgraduate Student Integration Forum at IOC was instituted, contributing to the interaction and exchange of experiences among students, fostering the debate about academic life and teaching policy.
