Celebration of the 150th anniversary of Oswaldo Cruz's birth

That Oswaldo Cruz and the history of Brazilian – and world – science are metonymically linked is an indisputable fact. And this finding was evident during the celebrations for the 150th anniversary of the scientist's birth, held by the Oswaldo Cruz Institute (IOC/Fiocruz) on August 05, 2022, the date on which not only the birthday of the patron of the Institute and the Fiocruz, but also the National Health Day, instituted in his honor.

Afterwards, the dean of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), Denise Pires de Carvalho, began the lecture “Oswaldo Lives and inspires the future” recalling the historical link between the IOC and UFRJ

Denise recalled that the partnership between the institutions was established especially by Carlos Chagas Filho, who worked at both in the 1930s and 1940s, bringing to the University the teaching and research integration model of the IOC

On the occasion, initiatives were launched with the disease as a theme
Researcher Eduardo Caio presented the project “Escape Room: The Enigma of Lassance”, an interactive experience conceived by the Trypanosomatid Biochemistry Laboratory of the IOC
Researcher Anunciata Sawada presented the exhibition “Chagas disease from prehistory to the present day”, a partnership between the Universidad Mayor de San Simon (Bolivia), the Sérgio Arouca National School of Public Health (ENSP) and the IOC
The Institute's Entomological Collection, under the responsibility of curator Marcio Félix (Laboratory of Entomological Biodiversity), was also part of the activity - with emphasis on the exhibition of specimens of triatomines, popularly known as "kissing bugs", which act as vectors in the transmission of the disease of Nasturtium
The “Expresso Chagas” workshop and the launch of the online course “Expresso Chagas 21: training popular health agents for endemic areas”, which use social technology to disseminate knowledge about the condition, developed at the Laboratory of Innovations in Therapies , Teaching and Bioproducts of IOC, were presented by Tania Araujo-Jorge.
