The Entomology Laboratory (LABE) of the Instituto Oswaldo Cruz (IOC/Fiocruz) has been carrying out scientific research since 1991 on various taxonomic groups of insects, training human resources in entomology and scientific outreach and dissemination actions.
His main lines of research address the order Hemiptera (kissing bugs, bedbugs, cicadas, leafhoppers), a megadiverse group of ecological, economic and human health importance.
Studies are also underway on the orders Coleoptera (beetles), Diptera (flies, mosquitoes), Hymenoptera (bees, ants, wasps), Phasmida (stick insects) and Trichoptera (no popular name).
LABE is also home to the centenary Entomological Collection of IOC (ECIOC/IOC). Started in 1901, it is the largest and oldest biological collection at the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation and one of the most important biological collections in Latin America. The Collection has around 5 million specimens, including insects from Brazilian fauna and other regions of the world, representing almost all known orders.
The Laboratory, accredited for the period 2023-2028, was previously called the Laboratory of Entomological Biodiversity.
