Entomological Collection
The Entomological Collection (CEIOC) from the Oswaldo Cruz Institute (IOC/Fiocruz) is the Institute’s oldest scientific collection. It began in 1901, with the description of the mosquito anopheles lutzi by Oswaldo Cruz, in the publication of the first scientific article by the then Instituto Soroterápico Federal (Instituto de Manguinhos).

One of the richest collections in Latin America, the CEIOC it has around 5 million specimens, including insects from the Brazilian fauna and other regions of the world, representing almost all known orders.

It is dedicated to the maintenance and preservation of specimens, the characterization and identification of species, the loan and deposit of specimens, the training of professionals and students and scientific dissemination.

Costa Lima Room
The heritage of the Entomological Collection of IOC it can be visited not only by researchers looking to deepen their studies, but also by all those who wish to have contact with this historical material. In the Costa Lima Exhibition Room, in Castelo Mourisco, several historical items are available, such as publications, furniture and insects that attract attention due to their aesthetics.

It is also possible to take a virtual tour of the Costa Lima Room in which the visitor is completely immersed with a 360° viewing experience. In the space, visitors will be able to see the items on display and learn more about them through the detailed captions that appear on the screen throughout the visit. Click here to access the virtual tour.
