Laboratory of Molecular Biology and Endemic Diseases

The Laboratory of Molecular Biology and Endemic Diseases (LABIMDOE) of the Oswaldo Cruz Institute (IOC/Fiocruz) has been active since the 1990s in research, technological development, innovation and training of human resources to generate and develop projects in the areas of biochemistry and molecular biology of pathogenic microorganisms.

LABIMDOE researches biomolecules with possible applications in the diagnosis and genotyping of parasites, chemotherapy and targets for the development of vaccines for neglected diseases, such as Chagas disease and leishmaniasis. For these problems, more recently, the Laboratory has invested in field work to study insect vectors, in order to generate new knowledge about transmission cycles and vector competence in biodiverse endemic areas.

The group conducts research in the following thematic axes:

1. Insect vectors and ecoepidemiological aspects of Chagas disease and leishmaniasis;

2. Molecular diagnosis of Chagas disease;

3. mRNA processing in trypanosomatids;

4. Leishmania spp. degradama;

5. Experimental chemotherapy in leishmaniasis.
