The Laboratory of Molecular Biology Applied to Mycobacteria (LABMAM) at the Oswaldo Cruz Institute (IOC/Fiocruz) has been active since 2003 in the research of organisms with significant impact on human and animal public health belonging to the genus Mycobacterium. 

Among his lines of research, he performs the genotyping of metabolizing genes in different isolates of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, studies the virulence and distribution of its strains with the greatest potential for dispersion in the population and works to identify possible mutations and deletions in the genome of its strains, in addition to developing methodologies for detecting drug resistance and investigating coinfection with HIV.

Its team is also dedicated to pharmacogenetic research in the therapeutic management of leprosy and promotes epidemiological studies on mycobacteria with a direct impact on the clinical area in partnership with other national institutions.
