Responsible for the complete genome sequencing of the BCG vaccine used in Brazil, the Laboratory of Functional Genomics and Bioinformatics of Instituto Oswaldo Cruz (IOC/Fiocruz) works to generate knowledge about the etiological agents of Chagas disease, leishmaniasis and tuberculosis, among others, using molecular and biochemical techniques.
It is also dedicated to the improvement of the vaccine against tuberculosis, developing molecular techniques that increase its safety and effectiveness, and the search for new drugs for neglected diseases. In partnership with the World Community Grid, it participates in the international initiative to compare the genomes of microorganisms, using the idle capacity of the personal computers of volunteers from all over the world.
