Leprosy Laboratory

The Souza-Araújo Ambulatory for leprosy care is maintained by the Hanseniasis Laboratory (LAHAN) of the Oswaldo Cruz Institute (IOC/Fiocruz) as a National Reference Service with the Ministry of Health in the area. The Ambulatory works in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of leprosy, in addition to more complex care, including biopsies and other procedures.

is currently accredited with the National Accreditation Organization (ONA) level 1 certificate for being in compliance with the Brazilian Accreditation Manual. 

In 2014, the Assistance Unit received the Certificate of International Accreditation by the Joint Commission International (JCI), the largest and oldest accreditation commission in the United States, through the Brazilian Accreditation Consortium (CBA). With the title, the Ambulatory became recognized as the first Brazilian center specialized in leprosy to act in line with international standards of excellence.

Laboratory care is offered through referral from the public health service, private practices and other health units. Patients are seen from Monday to Thursday, from 8 am to 17 pm, and communicants (family members of patients) are seen on Fridays, from 8 am to 12 pm.
