The Laboratory of Helminth Parasites of Fish (LHPP) of the Instituto Oswaldo Cruz (IOC/Fiocruz) works since 1991 in taxonomy, systematics, morphology, biology, ultrastructural and histopathological studies of helminths.
LHPP's research includes three projects: biodiversity of helminth parasites of freshwater fish, with morphological and molecular approaches; integrative taxonomy of helminth parasites of marine fish occurring off the coast of the State of Rio de Janeiro; and cataloging and morphology of Platyhelminthes and Nematoda parasites of invertebrates, fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals of South America.
The work carried out in the Laboratory results in the publication of original scientific works in national and foreign journals, presentation of works in national and international congresses and scientific meetings, development of undergraduate monographs, master's dissertations and doctoral theses, supervision of students and scholarship holders , contributing to the training of new researchers.
The research developed by the team is in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) within the 2030 agenda numbers 12 (Responsible product and consumption), which aims to “ensure sustainable production and consumption standards”, and 14 (life in water), which aims at “Conservation and sustainable use of oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development”.
