The Integrated Laboratory – Simulids and Onchocerciasis & Medical and Forensic Entomology (LISOEMF) of the Oswaldo Cruz Institute (IOC/Fiocruz) operates in the convergence and interdisciplinarity in sanitary entomology for unique health in scientific research, professional training, innovation, provision of health services and medical and forensic entomology with a focus on flies and simulids.
The Simulidae and Onchocerciasis Sector maintains the Simulidae Collection (CSIOC) Of the IOC, with more than 21,2 records from the neotropical region, and the National Reference Laboratory for Simulids, Onchocerciasis and Mansonellosis, which develops laboratory diagnoses of the vector and etiological agent; and interconnected research in entomology, parasitology and epidemiology of infectious parasitic diseases, for knowledge in biodiversity, bioecology, control, technology development, health education, advice and consultancy in the areas of epidemiological surveillance in health.
The Medical and Forensic Entomology Sector investigates the integrative taxonomy, biology and bionomy of muscoids, also develops bioassays for potential bioinsecticides, through natural products isolated from plants and entomopathogenic bacteria; promotes the evaluation of the microbiota resistant to antimicrobials present in dipterans, signaling their capacity for transmission, dissemination and action as a sentinel and reservoir; in order to assist in national service delivery in medical and forensic entomology.
The Integrated Laboratory – Simulids and Onchocerciasis & Medical and Forensic Entomology, accredited for the period 2023-2028, is the result of the merger of the Laboratories of Medical and Forensic Entomology and Simulids and Onchocerciasis.
