The Viral Morphology and Morphogenesis Laboratory (LMMV) of the Instituto Oswaldo Cruz (IOC/Fiocruz) has been active since 1992 in research, teaching, training of human resources and scientific dissemination on the morphology, morphogenesis and cytopathogenesis of different viruses in in vitro models, such as Dengue (DENV), Zika (ZIKV), Chikungunya, Fever Yellow and Poxvirus. More recently, he has been working on SARS-CoV-2 and the MPOX virus, with an emphasis on their interactions with host cells.
Within the context of the pandemic, the group has collaborated in ultra-estrastructural studies from different organs of immunosuppressed and immunocompetent animal models for SARS-CoV-2 with groups from Fiocroz.
Since its creation, the LMMV has played a leading role with regard to rapid viral diagnosis and studies of virus morphology and morphogenesis in Brazil.
In addition to in vitro studies, the group carries out in vivo studies whose proposal is the standardization of immunocompetent and immunosuppressed murine models for testing vaccines and drugs for DENV and ZIKV.
The Laboratory is also part of the Electron Microscopy Platform of the IOC.
