The Laboratory of Integrative Parasitology and Paleoparasitology (LPIP) of the Oswaldo Cruz Institute (IOC/Fiocruz) operates in conducting research, training human resources and technological development in the lines of parasitology and paleoparasitology.

Within these two major disciplines, the Laboratory studies the factors related to transmission and the phenomenon of parasitism in helminths, parasites of humans and other animals, and in other parasites and vectors. These processes are researched based on the integration of morphological taxonomy, molecular systematics and ecology, with the recent insertion of technological innovations such as artificial intelligence, geotechnologies and high-performance sequencing. 

The Laboratory houses the only National Reference Laboratory in Hydatid Disease in the country, as required by the Ministry of Health, where the diagnosis of hydaditosis/echinococcosis is carried out, mainly in the Amazon Region. 

The Reference Laboratory also promotes the development and application of strategies to raise awareness about the prevention of this and other helminthiases associated with the context of the form of transmission. 

The LPIP has a Paleogenetics Laboratory, also unique in the country, equipped and restricted to the analysis of archaeological and historical biological samples, which has allowed the study of diseases caused by bacteria, protozoa and helminths. 

The group carries out scientific dissemination in paleoparasitology on social networks and in playful and interactive workshops in public schools and at scientific meetings.
