The Malaria Research Laboratory (LPM) at the Instituto Oswaldo Cruz (IOC/Fiocruz) has been active since 1987 in research, teaching, service and training of human resources for the development of malaria and parasitic immunology and biology in Brazil, seeking to change, in the medium or long term, the epidemiological reality of malaria in the country. 

Since its creation, the LPM has made an impactful contribution to improving the quality of research and training in the area, due to the diversity of research carried out in humans and in murine and simian experimental models and the recognized experience and competence of its senior leaders. of teams. 

Such a comprehensive scope of technical-scientific activities enabled the LPM to propose the creation of the Center for Research, Diagnosis and Training in Malaria (CPD-MAL), which adds three more Research Laboratories of the Fiocruz (another in the IOC and two at the Evandro Chagas National Institute of Infectology) as a Reference Laboratory for malaria in the Extra-Amazon region with the Health Surveillance Secretariat (SVS) of the Ministry of Health (MS). 

In this context, the LPM has been providing services in the diagnosis of highly complex malaria cases, in the study of the parasite's resistance to commonly used drugs and in the surveillance of transmission in the Extra-Amazon region.
