Description
The course was created in 1994 and the first class graduated in 1997, after being approved and conceptualized by the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (CAPES). Unique in Latin America, its prospects include filling a gap in the knowledge of health service professionals focused on controlling endemic diseases transmitted by mollusks, in addition to training human resources who aim to enter research and teaching in medical and applied malacology.

Adopting a multidisciplinary perspective, the Course addresses theoretical and practical aspects of mollusc taxonomy, parasite-intermediate host interaction, ecology, control and health education. Emphasis is given to the study of schistosomiasis vector molluscs and other helminths of medical-veterinary interest, through the training of professionals who enable them to respond to the different situations to be faced in their service, such as the monitoring and control of parasitic molluscs vectors , as well as exotic species or pests.

Objective
Contribute to the training of human resources in medical and applied malacology, with an emphasis on in-service training of professionals from government health agencies, as well as biologists and other professionals in related areas who work both in research and teaching and in service, focused on health human, animal and environmental.

Audience
Professionals from bodies such as the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz), Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), World Health Organization (WHO), Municipal and State Health Departments, as well as biologists and other professionals in related areas, who will have the opportunity to acquire and improve knowledge in the area of Medical and Applied Malacology, guided by experts.
