Check out milestones in the Institute's history: from the production of serum and vaccines in the improvised facilities of the Manguinhos Farm to acting on the front lines of the most recent health emergencies

On May 25, 2025, the Oswaldo Cruz Institute (IOC/Fiocruz) turned 125, celebrating its Silver Secular Jubilee, on a shared anniversary date with the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz).

It is a story that spans generations, always marked by decisive contributions to science and public health. It is a story made by people for people. Full of scientists led and inspired by the patron Oswaldo Cruz.

The anniversary date dates back to the creation of the Federal Serum Therapy Institute, on May 25, 1900, an organization originally founded to produce serum and vaccine against bubonic plague, a disease that, at the time, was ravaging the population.

The commitment of the young team that worked in the early days of Manguinhos quickly transformed that small Institute into a unique experimental medicine center in the country, combining research, teaching and production.

A special timeline, in five reports, highlights milestones in this trajectory, which explains the national and international recognition achieved by IOC, highlighting the various actions on the front line of responses to health emergencies.

Check below:

1900 to 1925: from the Serum Therapy Institute to the Oswaldo Cruz Institute
Under the leadership of Oswaldo Cruz, the early years of the IOC recorded discoveries, training of scientists, expeditions and many other milestones

1925 to 1950: Decisive contributions to public health and science

1975 to 2000: scientific recovery and pioneering work against dengue and HIV
With the return of democracy, IOC was restructured and played a central role in the arrival of dengue and HIV in Brazil

2000 to 2025: Confronting health emergencies and looking to the future
Acting on the front lines of the most recent public health crises, the Institute reaffirms its commitment to science and health
