The meeting highlighted institutional actions that contribute to the academic trajectory of students.

The afternoon program for April 13th, at the Opening of the 2026 Academic Year of the Oswaldo Cruz Institute (IOC/Fiocruz), explored the multiple meanings of the verb 'to welcome' in postgraduate studies.  

From institutional listening to patent registration, including international opportunities and student assistance policies, the roundtable brought together a mosaic of important themes for the lives of graduate students, showing how acceptance is realized in different forms of support for students throughout their course.

With the theme 'Welcoming in Postgraduate Studies: institutional policies, care practices and student retention strategies', the activity included the participation of representatives from different areas of... IOC and from Fiocruz, who presented services, programs, and opportunities available to students, focusing on guidance, care, and academic and professional development. 

The meeting was held in the Arthur Neiva auditorium, in Manguinhos (RJ), and was broadcast live on... YouTube channel of the InstituteThe program included the start of the commemorative actions for the 5th act of Secular Silver Jubilee of IOC.

At the opening, the Director of Teaching and Extension, Norma Brandão, presented the Acolhe program. IOC, a system launched in 2021 with the aim of facilitating communication between professionals and students about disharmonious situations experienced in the work or teaching environment.

“We are not always talking about conflict, because life is always challenging. Sometimes, at certain times, we just need support,” he stated. 

Innovation and internationalization 

The relationship between science and practical application was addressed in the presentation of the Technological Innovation Center (NIT/IOC).  

Coordinator Klena Sarges and collaborator Camila Cardoso highlighted that research developed in the Postgraduate program can result in patents, software, and other solutions with potential application in the Unified Health System (SUS). 

“All good stories about vaccines, medicines, and other health products begin in a laboratory. The research developed in postgraduate studies can become medicines, diagnostics, or solutions that will help the SUS (Brazilian public health system),” Klena pointed out.

The speakers emphasized the importance of seeking guidance before publicly disclosing results to preserve intellectual property protection and facilitate technology transfer. The team can be contacted by email. 'nit@ioc.fiocruz.br

"Whenever you interact with a company and disclose confidential data, seek out the NIT (National Information Technology Center) to establish this confidentiality agreement," he said.  

Subsequently, the international dimension of the training was the focus of the presentation by Carlos Eduardo Rocha, from the International Relations coordination of... IOC, which addressed concepts of internationalization and scientific diplomacy in health. 

Rocha demonstrated how the exchange of researchers, cooperation agreements, participation in international networks, and involvement in multilateral forums are integrated into the institutional routine of the F.iocruz and do IOC.  

According to him, scientific diplomacy has been part of the institution's history since its inception, in dialogue with the tradition of international cooperation inaugurated by Oswaldo Cruz.

He further emphasized that the field is not limited to managers or senior researchers. On the contrary, it includes postgraduate students, who can participate in academic mobility programs, collaborative networks, events, and international projects. 

In the presentation, he also gave examples of initiatives supported by the International Relations Coordination of IOC, such as courses with foreign partners, collaborations with embassies, and multilateral projects, such as the MosaicFurthermore, it publicized external opportunities aimed at students interested in furthering their education in the field.

Listen to transform 

The role of institutional listening was reinforced by the general ombudsperson of the FiocDaniela Bueno Ruz explained in her presentation that the ombudsman's office does more than just receive complaints, including conflict mediation, guidance, and educational initiatives. 

The ombudsperson drew attention to the need to confront practices of moral and sexual harassment still present in academia and to break with the normalization of suffering in scientific training.

Daniela emphasized that the Ombudsman's role goes beyond receiving complaints and grievances. According to her, the sector also functions as a space for listening and institutional transformation, based on expressions such as suggestions, requests for action, and reports on everyday problems. 

"The Ombudsman's Office acts as an agent of institutional transformation, through qualified listening to the community's concerns and forwarding these demands so that they generate concrete changes," he commented. 

Closing the program, the coordinator of the Student Support Center (CAD) of FiocRuz, Etinete Gonçalves, presented the set of actions developed by the Foundation to strengthen student retention in postgraduate programs. 

According to her, CAD's work stems from the understanding that the academic trajectory is influenced by pedagogical, emotional, social, and economic factors. Therefore, student support needs to consider holistic development, including psychological well-being, citizenship, academic integration, accessibility, political participation, and preparation for the world of work.

Among the initiatives presented by the coordinator are the student support grant, the new housing allowance, the English language training program, and the F project.iocCareers, psychosocial support, psycho-pedagogical support, social assistance services, and actions aimed at foreign students or those from other states, through the F program.iocRuz Welcomes. 

The various presentations converged on the same idea: welcoming students in postgraduate studies doesn't just mean receiving them well at the beginning of the course, but also building conditions so that they can pursue their journey with support, security, and perspective.
