Millimeter wings beat under the watchful eye of the camera

Documentaries detail the life cycle of the Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes

Millimetric wings and transformations almost invisible to the naked eye star in two new documentaries from the Oswaldo Cruz Institute (IOC/Fiocruz).

Aedes albopictus flies over a human arm, in a scene from the documentary 'Life Cycle of Aedes albopictus'. Images: Genilton José Vieira

The images reveal, with scientific rigor and artistic sensitivity, the stages of development of Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus — vectors of diseases such as dengue, Zika and chikungunya.

The films aim to expand knowledge about mosquitoes and democratize access to science. The launch was held during the celebrations for 125 years of IOC

With a wealth of detail, the documentaries show high-quality images of mosquitoes from egg to adult stage. The species' reproduction, feeding and dispersion habits, which help to understand their presence in urban environments, are also covered.

The productions are directed by Genilton Vieira, with a script written in partnership with researcher Ricardo Lourenço. The soundtrack is by Spanish composer Pepe Bornay.

The videos are available for free on YouTube, with versions in Portuguese, English, Spanish and Libras. Check it out below.
