The Oswaldo Cruz Institute (IOC/Fiocruz) turned 120 on May 25. The trajectory of the germinal unit of Fiocruz is marked by the confrontation of public health emergencies since the first years of creation.

In 1900, the then 'Federal Serotherapy Institute' began its activities with the objective of producing serum and vaccine for the bubonic plague, which caused an epidemic in the city of Santos, in São Paulo.

Today, 120 years later, the Unit operates in diagnosis, training professionals and technological development, as well as in several lines of research on the new coronavirus, which has been concentrating efforts of the world scientific community.
