Amid the drop in immunization rates, Brazil lost, in 2019, the measles elimination certificate and is currently at a very high risk of reintroducing the poliovirus, which causes poliomyelitis.
Faced with an increase in cases of Covid-19, from the circulation of a new subvariant, only 18% of the population of the state of Rio de Janeiro over 18 years of age has all doses up to date, including the 2nd booster dose.
With the objective of discussing the scenario of immunization in the country, the Instituto Oswaldo Cruz (IOC/Fiocruz) promoted the event 'Vaccines: from vaccination history and coverage to scientific dissemination'.
The initiative brought together specialists from Fiocruz and the National Immunization Program on November 22, in the auditorium of the Vinícius Fonseca/Biomanguinhos Administrative Center, on the F campusiocruz, in Manguinhos (A. Brasil, 4.365).
The initiative was supported by the Institute of Technology in Immunobiologicals (Biomanguinhos/Fiocruz), Institute of Communication and Scientific and Technological Information in Health (ICICT/Fiocruz), House of Oswaldo Cruz (COC/Fiocruz), Polytechnic School of Health Joaquim Venâncio (EPSJV/Fiocruz) and Editora Fiocroz. The organizing committee was formed by the head of the Laboratory of Hantaviruses and Rickettsiosis of the IOC, Elba Lemos, and by the postdoctoral fellow at the same Laboratory, Jorlan Fernandes.
The program included a round table, with the participation of Biomanguinhos senior scientific advisor, Akira Homma, who discussed the history of vaccination in Brazil; the former PNI coordinator, Francieli Fantinato, who discussed vaccination coverage in the country; and Isabel Azevedo, responsible for the communication and education axis of the 'Reconquista das Altas Vacinais Coverages' project, who spoke about scientific dissemination. The project was an initiative of F.iocruz, Ministry of Health and Brazilian Society of Immunizations (SBIM).
Videos on the subject of vaccines were also shown. In addition, commemorative stamps produced by Correios were released based on the book 'Vaccines'. Published by Editora Fiocruz, the work is authored by Jorlan Fernandes, Akira Homma and Elba Lemos, in addition to Natália Maria Lanzarini, post-doctoral student at the Comparative and Environmental Virology Laboratory of the IOC.
