The Oswaldo Cruz Institute (IOC/Fiocruz), through the National Reference Laboratory for Leptospirosis, sent supplies, on May 13th, to support the carrying out of molecular diagnosis for leptospirosis in Rio Grande do Sul. The disease is common in flood scenarios, such as the tragedy that has hit the state of Rio Grande do Sul since the end of April.
Highly sensitive for detecting the DNA of bacteria of the genus leptospira, the kits are used in Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) tests. The material was sent to the state's Central Public Health Laboratory (Lacen-RS), at the request of the Ministry of Health.

This is yet another collaboration between the Reference Laboratory for Leptospirosis of the IOC and Lacen-RS. Last year, the Institute trained a Lacen professional to carry out a diagnosis of leptospira.
linked to Laboratory of Bacterial Zoonoses do IOC, the National Reference Laboratory (at the Ministry of Health) for Leptospirosis, carries out analyzes to define suspected clinical cases of the disease in Brazil, helping to clarify issues related to the epidemiology, diagnosis and control of Leptospirosis in situations of outbreaks and epidemics .
Since 2008, it has been accredited by the World Health Organization as a Collaborating Center for Leptospirosis for countries in Latin America and the Caribbean, providing consultancy in resolving epidemics and training health systems in countries in the region. Read more.
Due to the risk of leptospirosis infection in the floods that are occurring in Rio Grande do Sul, the IOC developed graphic teaching material that presents relevant information about the disease and how to avoid it.
After the floodwaters have drained, it is important that environments and objects are cleaned correctly to avoid infection with Leptospira bacteria.
The material is validated by the National Reference Laboratory for Leptospirosis and the Leptospira Collection, both linked to the Bacterial Zoonoses Laboratory of the IOC.
