The Oswaldo Cruz Institute (IOC/Fiocruz) inaugurated this Tuesday (17/06), the Center for Study and Research in Environment and Zoonoses (CEPAZ) Professor José Rodrigues Coura, in Campos dos Goytacazes, in the North of Rio de Janeiro.
Studies and debates on zoonoses and other topics relevant to the region will be carried out at the site, which will contribute to improving scientific research and public health in the municipality and adjacent cities.
The creation of the Center is in partnership with the Darcy Ribeiro State University of Northern Fluminense (UENF), the Municipal Health Department of Campos, the State Health Department of Rio de Janeiro and the Faculty of Medicine of Campos/Benedito Pereira Nunes Foundation (FMC/FBPN).
The space was designed by researchers Elba Lemos, from the Hantavirus and Rickettsiosis Laboratory of IOC, and Edwards Frazão Teixeira, from the Structural Biology Laboratory of IOC, granted to UENF under a technical-scientific cooperation agreement.
The opening ceremony was attended by several local authorities and experts, including:
Paulo Hirano, municipal secretary of Health
Rodrigo Carneiro, Director of Surveillance and Health of Campos
Charbell Kury, Undersecretary of Surveillance and Health of Campos
Edilbert Pellegrini Nahn Junior, general director of the Campos School of Medicine
Eduardo Volotão, director of Reference Laboratories, Outpatient Clinics and Biological Collections at IOC
Paulo Sérgio D'Andrea, coordinator of Biological Collections at IOC
Marco Horta, coordinator of Biosafety Platform 3 of the IOC

In his speech, Elba stressed the importance of integrating different institutions and municipal authorities to develop new research and actions.
“This space will benefit the entire region, promoting the development of projects and the training of new professionals in the area of tropical medicine and infectious diseases,” emphasized the doctor.
The specialist reinforced that the Center pays homage to one of the greatest tropicalists in Brazil, professor José Rodrigues Coura, former president of F.iocruz and former director of the Oswaldo Cruz Institute.
The Director of Reference Laboratories of IOC commented on the decentralization of activities of the Institute, based in the capital carioca.
“This is the first Research Center we have opened in the Southeast region. We have others in the Midwest and North of the country. It is very gratifying to see that another important project has become a reality and that we are taking the knowledge generated in our laboratories to other corners of the country”, commented Eduardo Volotão, remembering that the inauguration takes place in the year of the celebrations for the 125th anniversary of the IOC, celebrated on May 25th.

In turn, Edwards Frazão emphasized the expertise of the institutions that created the Research Center and the partnership with other entities to leverage the results of the space.
“The union of Fiocruz, the largest public science and health institution in Latin America, with UENF, which has brought development and trained human resources to the region since 1993, will further benefit our population. All this effort will be combined with a partnership signed with the city government and the School of Medicine, which will certainly generate positive results and guide public health policies”, celebrated the coordinator of the initiative.
Paulo Hirano highlighted more benefits that can be generated for the population through integration between entities.
“The knowledge that will be generated and expanded due to the existence of this Center will improve the advancement of applied science in assisting the population of Campos and surrounding areas,” emphasized the municipal health secretary.
CEPAZ has a collaborative nature and is open to establishing new partnerships with other institutions that are interested in contributing to improving the health of the population.
At this first stage, spotted fever is the focus of the work, considering the increase in cases in the North and Northwest of Rio de Janeiro.
“As one of the first actions, a meeting will be held with professionals from the State Health Department, with a date to be defined, to understand local demands and needs,” said Elba, who coordinates the Reference Laboratory for Rickettsiosis at the Ministry of Health.
