Meeting reinforced the partnership with the Department of Immunization and Vaccine-preventable Diseases

The Oswaldo Cruz Institute (IOC/Fiocruz) received, this Tuesday, 14/02, the visit of Éder Gatti, director of the Department of Immunization and Vaccine-preventable Diseases of the Health and Environment Surveillance Secretariat of the Ministry of Health (SVSA/MS). The meeting reinforced the historic and strategic partnership between the Institute and the portfolio and discussed priorities for new collaborations.

The meeting was attended by the director of the IOC, Tania Cremonini de Araujo Jorge; the deputy directors of Research, Technological Development and Innovation, Elmo Eduardo de Almeida Amaral and Luciana Ribeiro Garzoni; from Reference Laboratories, Outpatient Clinics and Biological Collections, Maria de Lourdes Aguiar Oliveira and Elizabeth Rangel; and Institutional Development and Management, Wania Santiago; in addition to the chief of staff of the Board of Directors, Daniel Daipert.

Also participating were the coordinator of the Technical Chamber of Environment and Health, Tereza Favre; the head of the Laboratory of Respiratory Viruses, Exanthematics, Enteroviruses and Viral Emergencies, Marilda Siqueira; and the adviser to the Coordination of Health Surveillance and Reference Laboratories of the Presidency of Fiocruz, Tania Fonseca.

Efforts to recover vaccine coverage

Among the priority topics for collaboration, Gatti highlighted the objective of reversing the decline in vaccination coverage rates in the country. He also pointed out the surveillance of vaccine-preventable infections, especially citing measles and polio, which cause concern due to the drop in vaccination, in addition to the flu and Covid-19.

“The National Immunization Program is facing a very serious problem: low vaccination coverage. The Oswaldo Cruz Institute is part of the Ministry of Health, it has great expertise in the production of knowledge and will certainly be able to help a lot in this mission”, declared Gatti.

The director of IOC presented the various fronts of institutional action, covering research, teaching and reference, and reinforced the interest in keeping open the dialogue with the new management of the Secretariat for Health and Environment Surveillance, which began in January, after a meeting with secretary Ethel Maciel , in Brasilia.

“The knowledge of this new team from the Ministry of Health about the potential of the Institute and the technical-scientific support that we can give to the Ministry is an agenda for permanent dialogue”, said Tania.

Regarding the priorities identified by the Department of Immunization and Immunopreventable Diseases, the director highlighted the potential contribution in the area of health education.

“The resumption of high vaccination coverage in Brazil is a really priority agenda. The Institute has been carrying out health education activities for over 20 years. This area is very necessary to form local multipliers, to understand and overcome the different problems that prevent vaccination coverage in the territories”, he pointed out.

Tania also recalled that the Institute has several reference laboratories that work to support the Ministry of Health in the surveillance and control of the most varied diseases, including vaccine-preventable diseases.

The commitment of IOC in this area was emphasized by the deputy director of Reference Laboratories, Outpatient Clinics and Biological Collections. “Our reference laboratories play a fundamental and historic role in the surveillance of vaccine-preventable diseases. This is one of our main missions in public health”, said Lourdes.

The Deputy Director of Research, Technological Development and Innovation also pointed out the alignment of the Institute's research agenda with the interests of the Secretariat for Health and Environment Surveillance.

“We have several laboratories working on the development and optimization of vaccines, in different degrees of maturity, from the pre-clinical process to vaccines that already have a high degree of maturity. We also have laboratories that work with the development and optimization of diagnostic kits”, mentioned Elmo.
