IOC meets with representative of the Barcelona Global Health Institute (ISGlobal)

Held on 15/09, the meeting aimed to discuss the work plan, signed between the IOC and ISGlobal in February 2023

The Board of the Oswaldo Cruz Institute (IOC/Fiocruz) met, on the 15th, with Alberto García-Basteiro, researcher at the Instituto de Salud Global de Barcelona (ISGlobal), to discuss the work plan arising from the international cooperation agreement signed between Fiocruz and ISGlobal, in 2021. The partnership signed two years ago has the main objective of developing research, teaching and translational activities in infectious and neglected, emerging and re-emerging diseases, of global relevance.

During the meeting, common points of interest in tuberculosis research were identified, such as the evaluation of new molecular tests for diagnosing the disease in adult and pediatric patients.

As a way of contributing to the debate, Garcia-Basteiro presented a summary of the projects he develops at the Manhiça Health Research Center (CISM), in Mozambique, all focusing on the characterization of tuberculosis at a microbiological, clinical and social level, and on the development of new diagnostic tools and treatments for the disease.

The meeting was attended by the director of IOC, Tania Araujo-Jorge, vice-directors Ademir Martins (Teaching, Information and Communication) and Luciana Garzoni (Research, Technological Development and Innovation), researchers Harrison Magdinier Gomes (Molecular Biology Laboratory Applied to Mycobacteria) and Maria Helena Feres Saad (Cellular Microbiology Laboratory), and the coordinator of the Institute's Institutional Cooperation, Anna Cristina Calçada Carvalho.
