The impact factor of the Revista Memórias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz (IOC/Fiocruz), according to the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) Web of Knowledge, rose from 2.058 in 2010 to 2.147 in 2011. IOC, for the second consecutive year, as the most prestigious publication of Biological and Biomedical Sciences in Brazil and Latin America. The ISI is the international body responsible for assessing the relevance of scientific journals. Its index is calculated based on the number of times the publication's articles are cited in a year, based on the journals indexed by the database and the number of works published in them. The new index also secured 16th place in the ranking of publications on Parasitology and 7th place in Tropical Medicine.

Created in 1909 by sanitarian Oswaldo Cruz, the magazine unites tradition and innovation. Currently edited by researcher Ricardo Lourenço, since 2010 the publication operates under a new format, with an online submission system for articles and the association of DOI (Digital Object Identifier) registration to each of them. In addition, all the material published in its pages – as well as the historical collection of the publication, digitized since the first edition – can be accessed free of charge through the website. According to the researcher and associate editor, Claude Pirmez, current vice president of Research and Reference Laboratories at Fiocruz, the magazine's sustained growth is due to a long-term investment focused on professionalization. “For example, we called publishing specialists, expanded the editorial staff and integrated associated editors into the team, so that the analysis of articles is always done by the respective specialists. To avoid plagiarism, we also rely on research integrity methods”, explained Claude.
The Scimago Journal Ranking (SJR) also noted the growing influence of Memórias, which, in 2011, also attributed the highest impact factor in Brazil to the magazine: 0,142. The SJR uses the Scopus database, published by Elsevier, and different parameters for evaluation.
Recently, the Scielo and Pubmed databases also started to make articles available, covering even more channels through which researchers from all over the world can check the historical scientific discoveries made eternal by the journal. Today, the only scientific publication besides Memórias to remain above the two points of impact factor in the ISI is Clinics, from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of São Paulo (FMUSP), which had 2.058 in 2011.
