Last Friday (10/17), the ceremony to award the Henrique Lenzi Medal of Merit in Science and Technology was held 19 scientists from the Oswaldo Cruz Institute (IOC/Fiocruz) who are among the most influential in the world, according to the international ranking published by the portal research.com.
The honor brought together the academic community of IOC in a moment of recognition and celebration and was part of the program of activities for the 3rd act of the Symposium IOC Jubilee 125 years.
The opening was marked by the showing of a video with testimonies and reflections by pathologist Henrique Leonel Lenzi, a prominent researcher at the IOC, whose work in the areas of experimental pathology, immunopathology and parasitology — especially in studies on schistosomiasis and leishmaniasis — consolidated important advances for science.
During the ceremony, the Institute's director, Tania Araujo-Jorge, highlighted the importance of the tribute.
"We have several generations of inspirational and formative figures. The Henrique Lenzi Medal is all about merit in science and technology and your commitment, from the laboratory to the funding and management departments. Our gratitude, our honor, and our tribute to all!" he stated.
The honorees shared reflections on their careers, challenges, achievements, and experiences, always praising Lenzi's legacy. The scientists also highlighted the parasitologist's influence on the training of professionals and the consolidation of a scientific culture guided by human sensitivity and a collaborative spirit.

Graduated in Medicine in 1969, Henrique Lenzi joined the Fiocruz in 1984, dedicating his career to scientific excellence and the training of new generations of researchers. For almost three decades, he led the Pathology Laboratory of IOC and held prominent positions at the Institution, leaving a lasting legacy for national biomedical research.
Researcher Ester Maria Mota, a member of the Laboratory that Lenzi headed, recalled her time with the scientist and his decisive contribution to the consolidation of experimental pathology in IOC.
"Dr. Lenzi was more than a professor; he was a true scientific father. His dedication to science was visceral, and his genius transcended his lines of research, reflecting a broad and integrated vision of medicine and biology," he emphasized.

Tania emphasized that the Henrique Lenzi Medal represents not only individual recognition for researchers, but also the solidification of a collective legacy of scientific excellence, reflecting Lenzi's influence on the development of new generations.
The 3rd act of the Symposium continues with two events scheduled for October 30th and 31st. On the 30th, activities will focus on cooperation with the Fernandes Figueira Institute. On the 31st, the theme will be Citizen Science, highlighting the relationship between IOC with society and how the participation of each individual contributes to the management and development of scientific projects.
