As part of its actions to constantly update scientific publication methods, the journal 'Memories of the Oswaldo Cruz Institute' adhered to the 'pre-print' logic, a contemporary trend that has been gaining more and more space in scientific publishing. Thus, manuscripts that have already been made public can be submitted to the journal in one of the several pre-print platforms currently available, with BioRxiv and PeerJ being some of the best known in the biomedical area. “This important advance of 'Memories' aligns the magazine with the most contemporary trends in scientific publication, in a search for agility and transparency, while contributing to more robust scientific results and more guided by academic debate”, celebrates Claude Pirmez, editor-in-chief of the journal.
Traditionally, the scientific publication procedure focused on editors – and, more recently from a historical point of view, also on the peer review process – the decision on whether a scientific article should gain publicity. In the pre-print system, there is open access to the manuscript to be submitted for publication in scientific journals before evaluation by editors and peers. With this, the sharing of results obtained and the opportunity for the manuscript to receive comments and suggestions from the scientific community are enhanced. “The keywords in this new way of looking at the publication of science results are openness, transparency and accessibility”, points out the editor-in-chief.
“With the traditional article publishing system, it can take months or even more than a year for the study to be published in a journal. The pre-print system also contributes to the improvement of articles before their final publication, since the author has the possibility of adding to his work the suggestions indicated by colleagues once access to the data is available”, explains Pirmez .
The hosting of manuscripts previously made available on pre-print platforms by the journal 'Memories' reinforces the recent movement of the Scielo Program (Scientific Electronic Library Online, the most important digital publication bank for open access Brazilian scientific journals), which announced, for 2018 , the launch of its own pre-print platform. It would be the first Brazilian platform of its kind [Click here to learn more].
Created in 1909, 'Memories' combines tradition and innovation. As part of its commitment to open access, the journal is free for both access and publication, making all content available on the internet. Published studies can also be accessed in international databases, including PubMed Central and SciELO. 'Memories' is the most cited journal in Latin America: it reached more than six thousand references cited in scientific articles in 2015, according to the latest edition of the 'Journal Citation Reports'.
The journal welcomes articles in all fields of tropical medicine (including pathology, field epidemiology and clinical studies), medical parasitology (such as protozoology, helminthology, entomology and malacology) and medical microbiology (virology, bacteriology and mycology).
