2.605 – a number that represents the quality, recognition and international reach achieved by one of the most traditional Brazilian scientific journals. The journal 'Memoirs of the Oswaldo Cruz Institute' reached a record impact factor in its trajectory, reaching the leadership in Latin America among the scientific journals evaluated in the ranking. The journal was also the most cited among publications from Latin American countries in 2016, surpassing the mark of six thousand references published in scientific articles. The data were disclosed by the company Thomson Reuters, responsible for the report with indicators of relevance of scientific publications around the world. “This historic result, the most positive ever achieved by the journal, is undoubtedly the result of a network of people who are committed to the growing process of internationalization of the journal, the improvement of its protocols for guaranteeing ethics in publication and careful editing for articles that are published”, highlighted the editor-in-chief of the publication, researcher Claude Pirmez.

When compared to other journals in the world, the publication is also highlighted in the area of Tropical Medicine, with the 4th highest impact factor, and 7th place in number of citations. Among journals in the area of Parasitology, 'Memoirs' is among the 12 most cited and with the highest impact factor. “There is a recent component that plays a fundamental role in this result: the fast track protocol, which consists of the accelerated publication, within 24 hours after submission, of articles on critical public health topics, as was adopted for Zika, chikungunya and, in early 2016, yellow fever. All this, of course, without giving up free access and publication, which is one of the foundations of the magazine”, pointed out Claude.

Created by Oswaldo Cruz in 1909, the magazine 'Memories' has free access and publication. The online submission of articles relies on the DOI system, an international identifier of scientific articles, which gives more credibility to their content. All the material published on its pages can be accessed by website🇧🇷 The historical collection of the publication is available digitally, since the first edition. Recently, all of his articles also became available for search in the Scielo and Pubmed databases, allowing access by researchers from all over the world.

About calculating the impact factor

The total number of citations and the calculation of the impact factor take into account the references to the journal present in the 'Journal Citation Reports' database, organized by Thomson Reuters. The impact factor is calculated by dividing citations to the publication by the total number of citable items, including articles and reviews, published in the journal in the last two years.
