Part of the program celebrating the 107th anniversary of Instituto Oswaldo Cruz (IOC), the new online submission system for articles from the journal Memórias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz will be released tomorrow (25/05), the birthday of IOC. Launched in 1909, the publication is the oldest scientific journal in Latin America and annually receives an average of 300 works for analysis and publication. The novelty, in addition to speeding up the process, from article submission to publication in the journal, represents the adoption of a system that will drastically reduce paper consumption.
“Definitely, there will be an important gain in time and we will also have a significant saving in paper and mailing expenses. Furthermore, problems such as the loss of correspondence will be avoided”, evaluates Ricardo Lourenço, editor of the magazine. According to him, the main beneficiaries of the new system will be the authors themselves. “The article can be sent by the author at any time, from his home, the laboratory or even in the field, all it takes is an internet connection – there is no need to print the article or have a postal service present. In addition, he can follow the entire progress of the judging and editing process online”, Lourenço points out. A member of the editorial board, the chief researcher of the IOC Delir Corrêa Gomes highlights another aspect of progress. “With online submission, we will reach the same standard as international journals that already use this tool”, he comments. The editor also points out that the initiative is a step forward in the adhesion of the IOC to the free software use policy of the Ministry of Health.

The novelty is yet another advantage offered by the publication, which makes its content available online for free in its entirety and reached its 102nd volume, published in 2006, with the highest impact factor since 1994: 0.847 points. The impact factor is a useful tool for assessing the relevance of a journal to the scientific community and is calculated by dividing the number of citations registered in the last two years by the number of articles published in the period. “From the point of view of a scientific vehicle, as a researcher, I consider the Memórias do Instituto Oswaldo Cross ideal, as it is freely accessible. It can be accessed anywhere in the world without paying anything, which is not the case with other publications, which generally charge for access to the content. Online submission will add to this benefit”, celebrates researcher Adeílton Brandão, head of the Laboratory of Molecular Epidemiology of Infectious Diseases of the IOC, which publishes an average of seven articles per year, two of which are in the Memórias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz.
