The approximately four thousand scientific articles published by Memórias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz in its 98 years of history will be available online from December 14th. The available collection corresponds to the period that goes from the launch of the first volume of the magazine, in 1909, to the present day. As Memórias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz was the scientific journal with the highest impact factor in Latin America in 2006 according to the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI). The launch was held at the Centro de Estudos do IOC last Friday, December 14th, at 10 am.

Since 1909, the magazine Memórias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz has published articles on a huge variety of topics related to the various biomedical areas. According to Ricardo Lourenço, Deputy Director of Education, Information and Communication at IOC and Editor of Memórias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz, at the time the Memórias was created, there were few indexers – publications that gathered and systematized scientific publications in the world –, making it difficult to disseminate and access the works. “There are many pioneering articles, which bring important results and which have only been confirmed by current studies”, he says. The researcher also remembers that the collection also includes historical works, illustrated by the great illustrators of the past of the IOC, such as Raimundo Honório and Manoel Castro e Silva.

Precisely because of its historical and, mainly, scientific value, the researcher believes that making this rich collection available online is of great importance. “Until today, to have access to all the knowledge published in Memórias before 1994, it was necessary to have a printed copy of the collection in a consultation library, normally an institutional one, which made its scope very limited”, he says. “With digitization and online availability, anyone will be able to consult, via the internet, studies published almost a century ago, which will undoubtedly greatly enrich scientific research.” Access is free.

Making the Memoirs collection available is also of great importance to the Oswaldo Cruz Institute, according to Ricardo. “Although it is a journal for the dissemination of knowledge produced in the world, it includes a large part of the scientific production published in the IOC, making the strength of the Institute even more visible worldwide, reinforcing its historic contribution to research in the biomedical area in Brazil.”

The Director of the Latin American and Caribbean Center on Health Sciences Information (BIREME / PAHO / WHO), Abel Packer; the WHO Press / WHO Coordinator, Hooman Momen; the Head of the Laboratory of Parasitic Diseases of the IOC, José Rodrigues Coura; and the Deputy Director of Education, Information and Communication of the IOC and Editor of Memórias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz, Ricardo Lourenço.
