'Memoirs' sets new record in impact factor

Result is related to the journal's strategies, including accelerated dissemination for topics of public health interest, receipt of pre-print articles and commitment to ethics in scientific publication

For the second consecutive year, the magazine 'Memories of the Oswaldo Cruz Institute' recorded a record in the impact factor, reaching the mark of 2.833 in 2017. The index was released this Tuesday, 26/06, by the company Thomson Reuters, responsible for calculating the relevance indicators of scientific publications. The journal remained one of the most recognized in the world in the fields of tropical medicine – occupying 4th place among 20 specialized publications – and parasitology – with 11th place among 37 journals. Among Brazilian scientific journals in all areas of knowledge, 'Memories' had the second highest impact factor. With a total of more than seven thousand citations in scientific articles published throughout 2017, the journal was the most cited in Latin America for the 18th consecutive year.

“The indicators indicate the quality of the magazine. This reflects the effort of the authors, who honored 'Memories' with their best work, and of the reviewers, who contributed with their observations to further qualify the articles”, comments the editor-in-chief of the journal, researcher at the Oswaldo Cruz Institute (IOC/Fiocruz) Claude Pirmez.

Aligned with contemporary trends in scientific publishing, last year the journal began to accept the submission of articles previously published in 'pre-print' platforms🇧🇷 The journal also has an accelerated route that allows the publication of studies within 24 hours. Initially created for the dissemination of works related to the international public health emergency caused by the Zika virus, in 2015, the 'Fast track' it was later expanded to include research related to yellow fever, chikungunya and ebola. Valuing integrity in scientific dissemination, the journal also became part of the Publication Ethics Committee (Cope) last year, committing to principles of transparency and good publishing practices, as well as an editorial code of conduct.

“These initiatives reflect our commitment to science and public health. It is important to note that national scientific production can be valued by publication in a Brazilian scientific journal, which is very well qualified in the international scenario”, emphasizes Claude.

Founded by scientist Oswaldo Cruz in 1909, 'Memoirs' is free twice as much: for access and publication. The entire content of the journal can be accessed online, with a digital version of more than a century of collection. Published studies are also indexed in international databases, including PubMed Central and SciELO.

About the impact factor

The total number of citations and the calculation of the impact factor take into account the references present in the 'Journal Citation Reports' database, organized by Thomson Reuters. The impact factor is calculated by dividing publication citations recorded in the last year by the total number of citable items, including articles and reviews, published in the journal in the previous two years. Thus, the newly released impact factor represents the average number of times that works published in the journal in 2015 and 2016 were cited in studies published in 2017.
