Multiple perspectives on dengue in a new book by Editora Fiocruzi

Editora F pre-releaseiocruz, the book 'Dengue: theories and practices' brings together texts by several specialists on the subject

Social sciences, medicine, communication, entomology, epidemiology and veterinary medicine are some of the areas of knowledge of the 36 authors of the book 'Dengue: theories and practices', which was pre-released by Editora Fiocruz, this Tuesday (28/04), in an extraordinary session of the Centro de Estudos do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz (IOC/Fiocruz).

The work, which, like the disease, is transversal to several disciplines, resorts to different perspectives to approach the theme in a comprehensive and diversified way, hence the title in reference to theories and practices.

For this, the book systematizes the knowledge dispersed in the literature and outlines a historical overview of dengue, addresses its scientific, clinical, social and communicational aspects and discusses the perspectives for the future of disease control in Brazil.

The result is a book that brings together several voices that talk about dengue for a wide range of readers. One of the main challenges for the book's organizers was to define its target audience.

"Originally we thought of writing to health professionals, but we quickly realized that dengue is not an exclusive problem in this area and we saw the importance of approaching the subject in a broader way", emphasizes Denise Valle, researcher at the Molecular Flavivirus Laboratory of the Oswaldo Cruz Institute (IOC/Fiocruz), author and one of the organizers of the book.

In this way, as the book itself defines, it is a work for those interested in understanding dengue, but, mainly, it is a work for those who want to understand the disease in all its scope, extrapolating scientific and medical issues and approaching less studied fields, such as social sciences, education and communication.

With this, the book seeks to contribute to an understanding of the dengue problem, which affects a large part of the Brazilian population.

“I always say that one of the things that gives meaning to our work is the hope that we are really contributing to more and better days for our populations.iocroz.

"In search of this understanding, a book was written mostly by and for Brazilians. In it, the country's researchers, a reference in the subject, speak to their countrymen about the dengue problem with propriety and in a broad and comprehensive way", points Denise Valle.

The looks

The publication's organizers point out that, despite dengue being intrinsically linked to health issues, the disease is not restricted to medical or scientific aspects.

"There is an urgent need to redirect the focus to the health of populations and not just to the removal or elimination of diseases. It is necessary to look, be inspired and dialogue with other fields of knowledge", opines Denise Pimenta, from the Laboratory of Education in Health and Environment of the Fiocruz-Minas, author and one of the organizers of the book.

The clinical issues of dengue also have space. Doctor Rivaldo Venâncio, author and one of the organizers of the book, reinforces the plurality of the work.

"The book translates the knowledge accumulated by a group of professionals with extensive experience in research, laboratory diagnosis, patient care and management of services and programs directly related to dengue", highlights the researcher from the F officeiocroz in Mato Grosso do Sul. Viral aspects of dengue are addressed in the chapter signed by renowned virologist Hermann Schatzmayr - this is the last posthumous publication by the researcher from IOC/Fiocruz, died in 2010.

Aligning the speeches

The task of bringing together so many different voices in a harmonious way was one of the greatest difficulties encountered by the organizers. “It was a huge challenge, which started with the organizers themselves: a biologist, an anthropologist and a doctor”, recalls Denise Pimenta. Differences in language also emerged as an obstacle to be overcome.

"The specialists are used to writing for their peers and the objective was precisely to overcome this barrier", adds Denise Valle. Finding a middle way, in order to make the work accessible to all possible readers, was fundamental.

"We couldn't even be so specialist, reaching only the public of a certain area, nor be so generalist, taking away the interest of the specialist", completes Valle.

As with the authors of the book, interdisciplinarity was also present in the organizers.

"Each of the three is from a different area", signals Denise, highlighting the presence of a doctor addressing the clinical aspects of the disease, a biologist bringing questions about the mosquito vector and an anthropologist emphasizing the human and social aspects of the theme.
