An idealistic doctor, who, while still a student, fell in love with studying and fighting the diseases of poverty. A scientist and professor concerned with the social determinations of health. A communist militant impeached by the dictatorship and who, in exile, gained international recognition by promoting, in the service of the WHO, the control of schistosomiasis in Tunisia.
An author of outstanding works in parasitology and medicine. Luis Rey presented himself as a multifaceted and inspiring character, which motivated the directors Marina Saraiva, of the Journalism and Communication Service (Sejor) of the IOC and Wagner de Oliveira, from VideoSaúde, to two years of research and interviews. The images are by cameraman and editor Josué Damacena, also from Sejor.
The film reveals the last interview given by the scientist, at the age of 98, shortly before his death on March 05, 2016. It also features the testimonies of Luis Rey collected by researchers from the Oral History project at Casa de Oswaldo Cruz, in June 2002. The profile of the renowned parasitologist is also traced with the testimonies of colleagues, disciples, his youngest daughter, Clara Rey and the director of the WHO's Department of Control of Neglected Tropical Diseases, Dirk Engels. The scientist's family allowed access to the collection of documents and objects.
Talented photographer, Luis Rey left a rich collection of images that contributed to the production of the documentary. The directors also undertook a search for documents referring to Luis Rey in the archives of the military dictatorship, of the then State Department of Political and Social Order (DEOPS) of São Paulo, maintained by the Public Archive of the State of São Paulo.
