The Oswaldo Cruz Institute (IOC/FiocOn February 10th, the Federal Institute of Goiás (IF Goiano) and the Federal Institute of Goiás (IF Goiano) signed a Letter of Intent for the creation and structuring of the Center for Studies and Research in Environment, Zoonosis Surveillance and One Health (CEPAV – One Health).
The facility, which will be located in Rio Verde (GO), consolidates institutional cooperation and contributes to expanding actions focused on research, teaching, and outreach in the health field.
The ceremony was attended by the Director of Teaching and Extension of IOCNorma Cristina Brandão, who represented the unit's director, Tania Araujo-Jorge.
CEPAV – One Health is the fifth formally established center with support from IOC in different regions of the country.
Initiatives such as the [name of initiative] are already part of the network. CEPAV-Chagas (Posse/GO), the Cepab-Clima (Rio Branco/AC), the laboratory linked to CEPAV in Limoeiro do Norte/CE and CEPAZ Professor José Rodrigues Coura, in Campos dos Goytacazes (RJ).
In Rio Verde, the proposal arose from a collaboration between Professor Jânio Cordeiro Moreira, a postdoctoral researcher at... IOC and who will act as the local coordinator of the new center, and the researcher from the Laboratory of Biology and Parasitology of Wild Mammal Reservoirs of IOC, Paulo D'Andrea.

The initiative stemmed from the identification of environmental and infrastructure issues in the municipality that could impact the presence of vector insects and mammalian reservoirs of zoonotic diseases—central themes in the One Health approach, which integrates human, animal, and environmental health.
According to Norma, the proposal from the centers supported by IOC It focuses on a structuring perspective for the areas of research, teaching, and outreach.
"Having a local structure makes it possible to integrate different projects on specific themes, strengthen research networks, and develop direct actions with local agents and civil society," he highlighted.
The education area is considered strategic in consolidating the centers already inaugurated and the future CEPAV – One Health.
According to the Director of Education, the training of human resources, the mobility of teachers and students, and the encouragement of the creation of collaborative networks should be integrated into the work plan, which will be detailed after the partnership is formalized.
All Postgraduate Programs of IOC "They have the potential to collaborate on joint research, teaching, and outreach projects," he stated.
She also highlighted the academic potential of the Rio Verde Campus of IF Goiano, which has programs Strict sensu, including a course rated 6 by Capes.
"The collaboration is promising and can generate impacts both on scientific production and on improving the health of the local population," he stressed.
The CEPAV – One Health project is still in the implementation phase. During the ceremony, the cornerstone of the physical space was laid, which will house laboratories, scientific collections, and molecular biology equipment.
