With a significant score of 2.743, the journal 'Memories of the Oswaldo Cruz Institute' recorded, in 2020, a significant increase in its impact factor, as shown in the latest update of the Journal Citation Reports (JCR). In this way, the magazine, edited by the Oswaldo Cruz Institute (IOC/Fiocruz), maintains its position among the main scientific journals in Brazil and Latin America.

In the national territory, 'Memories' is the seventh best positioned journal among 409 others. Among Latin American countries, it occupies the 11th position among 1008 scientific journals.

The journal also excels in the two publication areas it is listed in the JCR. In Tropical Medicine, it is the 8th most relevant journal in the world. In the field of Parasitology, it ranks 16th among journals from different regions.

“The impact factor is a reference for monitoring the magazine's performance. With all the support offered by IOC, the ascending line traced by 'Memories' is the result of editorial policies, in general, applied by the various editors who were in charge of the journal throughout its history”, emphasizes Adeilton Brandão, current editor. See the table with the numbers across the years.

To arrive at the impact factor index, the Journal Citation Reports, currently under the responsibility of the company Clarivate, uses a traditional metric that takes into account the citations received in the period of one year by publications made in the two years prior to the evaluation. The number obtained is divided by the number of citable items published in the same period. Therefore, for the 2020 evaluation, the citations made in that year of publications carried out in 2018 and 2019 were divided by the number of items published in these last two years.

new record

For the 16th consecutive year, 'Memories of the Oswaldo Cruz Institute' remains the most cited magazine in Latin America. The journal had already occupied the first position in 1999, 2000 and 2002, totaling 19 years as the most cited. In the 2020 cycle, there were 7.753 citations in scientific articles, the highest number ever recorded by the journal at JCR.

“This number reflects a number of factors. 'Memories' is a century-old journal, one of the oldest in circulation in the field of Tropical Medicine and Parasitology. Over its 112 years of activity, it adapted itself to the needs of each era and always incorporated the best editorial practices”, emphasizes Adeilton.

The editor recalls that in 1989 English was adopted as the official language of the Journal, allowing for international strengthening. In 1996, with the consolidation of the internet as we know it today, 'Memories' was a pioneer in the creation of its own website, where new articles were published. “Another moment of great importance was when the entire collection, from 1909 to the present day, became available online. And, more recently, we have advanced with the acceptance of articles in pre-publication repository”, points out.

Founded in 1909 by scientist Oswaldo Cruz, 'Memories' magazine is a symbol of tradition and innovation with its historical collection in constant expansion. Free both for access and for publication, the journal hosts national and foreign scientific articles in the field of biomedical sciences on a modern and dynamic website. The journal's publications are also indexed in international databases, including PubMed Central and SciELO.
