In the past five years, the Memórias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz magazine (IOC/Fiocruz) achieved international projection by establishing itself as the main Brazilian scientific journal and the most important in the area of biological and biomedical sciences in Latin America. With a current 2.147 points of impact factor according to the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) Web of Knowledge, the international body responsible for assessing the relevance of publications of this genre, the journal inaugurates a new phase with the reformulation of its website. The modernization was financed by the public notice 'Support for the reformulation of institutional scientific and technological journals – 2010' by the Carlos Chagas Filho Foundation for Research Support in the State of Rio de Janeiro (FAPERJ). The launch took place this Friday, March 8, at the traditional Centro de Estudos do IOC.

Unprecedented, the new functionalities invest in the interaction with the visitor. Readers can create, for example, a profile to register their favorite topics and receive article suggestions. A new search tool facilitates and stimulates searches in the collection. “Everything gathered in a modern and friendly interface, inspired by the portals of the most important scientific journals in the world”, guarantees the publication's editor, researcher Ricardo Lourenço.

The main mission of the site is to promote the magazine outside Brazil, attracting new readers and, consequently, more international authors. “We are going to show that Memórias is a good, safe and fast vehicle for publishing works. We want to attract more authors who carry out research in Asia and Africa, for example, where parasitic diseases are still very important”, emphasizes Lourenço. Another expectation is to expand the range of topics covered. "We have received few contributions regarding international studies on bacterial diseases such as tuberculosis and leprosy", he points out.

According to the executive editor, Hikmat Zein, many Brazilian and foreign researchers still see Memórias as a journal restricted to studies of the IOC🇧🇷 “This modernization will allow for a change in our image – from institutional to international”, he bets.

New features

From now on, the site allows a search by keywords within the collection, composed of more than four thousand articles. Visitors also have the possibility of registering topics of interest by creating a profile according to their relationship with the publication: article author, reviewer or just reader. In this way, the system itself will suggest reading related and more popular studies.

The site provides three registration options: reader, author and reviewer, in addition to aggregating the collection and allowing refined searches. Photo: Disclosure

Researchers interested in joining the journal's team of reviewers may apply through the website. As Memórias is a public journal, financed by the government and free of charge, the revision service is not paid. “We demand that each article be seen by two researchers who are references in the subject and, preferably, foreigners. Occasionally, we have difficulty finding the best or most specialized, and the site will help us to form a bank of volunteers”, concludes Hikmat.

a century of history

Created in 1909 by Oswaldo Cruz himself, Memórias has been undergoing editorial and structural changes that began in 2007. Since then, the receipt of articles has increased by 20% and the magazine has risen one point in the ISI. The upward trajectory of the publication, which makes a real contrast with the low impact scenario of national scientific production, was highlighted in the 3rd Seminar on Performance Evaluation of Brazilian Journals of Journal Citation Reports of 2011, held in the second half of 2012.

The journal gained its first website in 1996 and, in 2007, adopted the Open Journal Systems (OJS) online article submission system. The measure simplified the editorial process by replacing sending manuscripts by mail, recorded on CD. In 2008, the site started using the Digital Object Identifier System, the DOI (Digital Object Identifier), which allows the certification of texts and works published on the Internet and the protection of copyright.

In 2009, the entire digitized collection was hosted on the Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO) portal and most of it is also available on PUBMED, allowing free access to pioneering studies carried out by scientists who have marked the last century, such as Carlos Chagas, Gaspar Vianna, Leônidas Deane, Adolpho Lutz and others. “From now on, the editions will also be stored on the Memórias website itself, an additional incentive for the visitor to browse the site”, explains Hikmat.

In early 2012, with support from the State of São Paulo Research Foundation and SciELO itself, Memórias migrated to the ScholarOne platform, used by the most important journals in the world. In addition to having a submission system widely used among researchers, ScholarOne allows authors to send their manuscripts with more security and quality, making it easier to charge for revisions by sending automatic emails.
