The centenary Castelo de Manguinhos is home to the scientific journal 'Memories of the Oswaldo Cruz Institute'🇧🇷 Founded by Oswaldo Cruz in 1909 and edited since then by Instituto Oswaldo Cruz (IOC/Fiocruz), the journal publishes scientific articles in the biomedical area, standing out worldwide in the fields of tropical medicine and parasitology. According to the latest reports from the company Thomson Reuters, responsible for calculating the relevance indicators of scientific publications around the world, 'Memories' reached a record impact factor for two consecutive years: 2.605 on 2016 e 2.833 on 2017

The journal also maintained the most cited publication brand in the Latin American region, registered since 2005, with more than seven thousand citations in scientific articles last year. “It is exciting – and at the same time a great responsibility – that the magazine continues to be produced in the same building, even more so in a space as incredible as Castelo de Manguinhos, from an architectural and symbolic point of view. It is an honor to have the opportunity to keep 'Memories' alive, pulsating and following the trends in scientific publishing”, comments the magazine's editor, researcher at Instituto Oswaldo Cruz (IOC/Fiocruz) Claude Pirmez.

One of the oldest scientific journals in Latin America, 'Memories' combines tradition and modernity. Last year, the journal began to accept manuscripts previously made public in 'pre-print' platforms🇧🇷 A contemporary trend, the dissemination of studies on specialized 'pre-print' sites allows research results to be shared quickly with the scientific community. In this case, the manuscripts are published and subsequently submitted to journals, in which the evaluation of editors and peer review are carried out in order to guarantee the quality of the published articles.

Since 2015, the magazine has also provided a way to accelerated disclosure of scientific articles related to the Zika virus, which was later expanded to studies on chikungunya, yellow fever and Ebola. Called Fast Track, the system publishes studies online within 24 hours of submission. Publication occurs after evaluation by a journal editor. Articles considered relevant are indexed and published on the journal's website, in the Fast Track section. To guide readers, it is indicated that peer review is ongoing.

Confirming its appreciation of integrity in scientific dissemination, 'Memories' also joined the Publication Ethics Committee (Cope, in the acronym in English). Created in the United Kingdom, the group brings together more than ten thousand international journals, which must comply with the principles of transparency and good publishing practices, in addition to respecting the code of conduct for editors of scientific publications.

The entire content of the magazine 'Memories of the Oswaldo Cruz Institute' is available online with double gratuity, both for access and for publication. The historical collection of the publication is available free of charge on the internet, digitized, since the first edition. Recently, all of his articles also became available for search in the Scielo and Pubmed databases, facilitating access by researchers from all over the world. After modernization financed by the Carlos Chagas Filho Foundation for Research Support of the State of Rio de Janeiro (Faperj), the magazine now has a modern and dynamic website, with good interaction with the user by allowing searches in the collection and the creation of a profile to receive reading suggestions, similar to the portals of the most renowned scientific journals in the world.
