More than four thousand scientific articles, published throughout the last century. Gems such as pioneering studies by Oswaldo Cruz, Carlos Chagas, Adolpho Lutz, Gaspar Vianna and other great names in national science. Works by many of the greatest Brazilian scientific illustrators in history. The vast and rich collection of the magazine Memórias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz, which turned 100 in 2009, is now available for search on the Scientific Electronic Library Online (Scielo) website🇧🇷 Making the material available will allow free access, in a simple and quick way, to all articles of great historical and scientific relevance published on its pages. At Memoirs were pointed out by Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) as the scientific journal with the highest impact factor in Latin America in 2009.

The magazine already had, on its own website, all its editions available online (in PDF format) since the end of 2007. However, the partnership with Scielo allowed the material to become part of the library's bank and, therefore, available to be accessed from its search engines. “After digitizing the magazine's entire archive, since its first edition in 1909, the next step would have to be to facilitate access to this material, which we have now achieved with the partnership with Scielo”, explains researcher Ricardo Lourenço de Oliveira , editor of the magazine.
Due to the historical and, mainly, scientific value of the publication, the researcher believes that facilitating the search in its collection is of great importance. “On the pages of the magazine a series of articles were published that help to tell the history of Brazilian science. Many of them are still references within their fields”, says Lourenço. “However, finding any study was a laborious process until finding the year, volume and edition number in question. Making the content available on Scielo will facilitate and speed up queries, which can, without a doubt, greatly enrich scientific research in Brazil and worldwide.” In addition, Scielo has already transferred part of this collection to Pubmed, such as works published from the 1970s onwards, for example, further promoting our collection internationally. Access is free.
Since its inception, the magazine Memórias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz published articles on a huge variety of topics related to the various biomedical areas. According to Lourenço, at that time there were few indexes – publications that gathered and systematized scientific publications in the world –, making it difficult to disseminate and access the works. “The journal was created by Oswaldo Cruz himself, with the aim of becoming a journal in which national scientific articles could be published with high quality”, he highlights. “Before that, most researchers ended up publishing the results of their studies in newspapers with poor graphic quality and very irregular and restricted circulation”. The editor also points out that, in addition to pioneering articles, the Memoirs also house historical works by the great illustrators of the past of the IOC, such as Raimundo Honório and Manoel Castro e Silva, some of the biggest names in national scientific illustration.
