The 'Annual Award IOC de Teses Alexandre Peixoto' was created by Instituto Oswaldo Cruz (IOC/Fiocruz) to contemplate, annually, the best theses developed by doctoral students of the Graduate Programs Strict sensu do IOC🇧🇷 The award is a tribute to researcher Alexandre Peixoto, who died early in February 2013, when he coordinated the Graduate Program Strict sensu in Cellular and Molecular Biology IOC.
The creation of the 'Annual Award IOC de Teses Alexandre Peixoto' was decided by the Institute's community through public consultation. The process began at the Deliberative Council of the IOC, when the councilors approved the decision to pay homage to the geneticist, for his legacy in training young researchers and scientists.
History
Researcher Alexandre Afrânio Peixoto graduated in Biological Sciences, with a Bachelor's Degree in Ecology, from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (1986). He had a master's degree in Biological Sciences (Genetics), developed at the Department of Genetics at UFRJ (1989). He completed a PhD in Genetics at the University of Leicester, in England (1993), and a postdoctoral degree in Genetics at Brandeis University, in the United States (1997).
He was a senior researcher at the Oswaldo Cruz Institute, recognized as a Level 1A researcher and leader of the research group on Molecular Genetics of Behavior in Insects with the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq), in addition to having received international recognition through the editions 2002 and 2007 from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute International Academic Research Program.
The researcher, who published over 70 articles, had experience in the field of genetics, with an emphasis on insect genetics. Alexandre Peixoto was head of the Laboratory of Molecular Biology of Insects and coordinator of the Graduate Program Strict sensu in Cellular and Molecular Biology IOC, also serving as a member of the editorial board of the magazine Memórias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz.
